Let’s Talk About It!
Posted July 24th, 2012
It has been said that opposites attract. I believe that this is possibly true, but only on
a surface level. You can quite happily cohabit with someone that doesn’t share
your opinion on music, movies, books, food, fashion, favourite Star Wars
Character (errr…..). I believe that is what the phrase “opposites attract”
refers to. And just because you’re opposites doesn’t necessarily mean there’ll
be any attraction!
So, what would bind two seemingly incompatible lovers together? Shared Values! A couple
can actually share the same taste in all the above things, but be highly wrong
for each other.
It’s the moral, compassionate view that basically pulls people together. You may like
the Opera, while he likes long winded RUSH concerts. However, what pulls you
together is the fact that you share the same compassionate view of the world
around you. Shared values. The impact of this on any marriage cannot be
underestimated.
One area that can be a sticking point is the area of finances. It’s a biggy. You may
both love the same restaurants and social pursuits, but if one of you is a
spendthrift and other a savvy saver there will be much locking of horns in the
future. The crux of the problem though is that people just don’t like to talk about
money. They’d rather let financial disparity bubble away under the surface
rather than face the problem head on. Or worse, you may find you and your
partner are constantly facing circular arguments around what’s going in and out
of the bank account.
One way around this is to let someone else ease the burden. An Independent Financial Advisor
can help you sort through your liabilities, savings and investments and help
you strike that balance. An IFA can:
- Save you time. And save you arguing. It could arguably save a marriage!
- Help you plan your finances for your future
- Help you find a compromise between using your money now and saving it for the future
- Review your circumstances on an Annual, Bi-annual or quarterly basis.
Your life doesn’t need to revolve around your finances. With a little professional help,
you may find your money can work for you rather than the other way around.
Oh and my favourite was always R2-D2.
